Driver's License Dillema

Surely someone else has come across this problem:

I have been a full time RV'r for just over a year. A few years back, I sold everything and now travel and have no physical address. I travel the country and have my mail (junk mail) forwarded once a month to where ever I happen to be. I own no property (home) nor do I normally stay in established campgrounds very long.

Problem: My New Mexico driver's license has just come up for renewal and they do not recognize a PO Box as an address. Plus you have to show 2 forms of proof that you actually reside at a physical address. A supervisor at the NM DMV had no answer to this problem. As far as they're concerned, I'm up a creek without a paddle. What to do?

Full time RVers find answers to this question in the Escapees web pages. Supposedly South Dakota, Florida and some other states will work with you to get a driver's license and register your RV so you are legal.

To get the real ID drivers license in FL, and as far as I know it's the only one you can get, you need the two forms of proof of a physical address. Also on active law enforcement in FL can use a P.O. box.

Switch to your local UPS store. They have both physical address and PO box.

P.O. boxes are not recognized in many states. We used the Escapees RV Club for our mail forwarding which gave us a street address.... never had a problem in 16 years.

Texas, S Dakota and Florida all have mail forwarding services that give you a physical address to use to declare residency in the state, obtain your drivers license, register to vote etc. All of these state have special documentation for full-timers that is not that same as someone who owns property and has to document their address. You can do a search for mail forwarding services in whatever state of those 3 and most have information and documents on their website. Sign up, get your address on everything changed so you start receiving mail thru that service and they then can help you establish your residency, register & license your vehicles, get drivers license etc. That address is then used for banking, taxes,license etc. You do not however normally use box #. You would use the address and then No _____ or # _____ or apt _____ rather that putting PMB (personal mail box) for anything that will not accept a PO box.

Doesn't your insurance require a physical address? This may vary from state to state, but we have used one of our daughters for several years now. It looks like 18 will be the end of the endless road for us then we will have some sort of physical address.

We have been very happy with these folks. Another state like SD might be better for insurance because Florida is a bit high. Close to Calif rates.

Just get creative.
Also, try AZ if you're close.
I got an AZ license by using the address form the extended stay I was staying in until we moved. They didn't even blink at it.
Bonus, it'll be the last license you get, likely. Mine is still good for another 20 years and I got it 15 years ago!

We had the same problem in Michigan 10yrs ago. It was a fun discussion:
- So where do you live?
- On our boat.
- Don't you have a house or apt?
- No
- Well what's the address of the marina?
- I can give you that but it's only good till next week.
- Well what marina are you going to be at after next week?
- Not sure but won't be there more than a few days anyway.
- and so on...

Finally, gave them my parents address and that made the girl so much happier.
