I did that on a near 2-year cross country tour. There are plenty of places to store your rig.
In southern Ontario we left it for the summer in a farmer's big barn -- he advertised as an RV storage place, and it was just fine.
In North Carolina I was concerned about the storms, etc, so I sprang big cash to rent an indoor storage garage for 5 months.
Most U-store places will rent you a short time spot if they are not full. Or, go out to a local airport on a weekend, and see if there's a guy with a half full hangar who would like a few extra dollars.
