Off setting expenses

Food is always a big expense and my grandmother who lived during the depression taught me that if you make up a menu for a full week and had only those meals it saved a lot of money. I still can't let a Wednesday go by without thinking about her meatloaf.
And then when I cook something, like meatloaf, I freeze half and I save some for lunch the following day.
Coupons are mostly a waste of time and money unless they are for something that you use all the time. If you clip and use it because it looks like something you'd like to try, its no bargain. But it never hurts to look.
Propane is another thing you can save money on. I have a slow cooker and I roast veggies in it and use it as much as I can. We don't use the propane heater at night to keep us warm, extra blankets and a small electric heater helps out.
Small short trips instead of long hauls save gas as has been mentioned before.
Where you camp and when also makes a difference. We found that in our state they have discounts for off season camping.

We have been volunteering at state and federal facilities. We have not paid for camp sites more than 75 nights in 3 1/2 years of fulltiming. We were traveling about 7000 mi the last two years we've cut that down this year to 2500 to save a little to replace tires on the 5th wheel and will again next year do more miles.

As someone else said, what is your idea of full timing?

Also what is your work history and skill set?

I volunteered my time last winter in exchange for free stay. I will never do it again!

The problem is everyone has a job to do for staying. Mostly things like taking people to their site and making sure they are parked properly, activity helpers and so on. Nothing too difficult. I was doing construction projects, much more valuable per hour than what the others were doing. So there was jealousy on their part.

Before you know it we were being scrutinized wondering what I was doing and how long we were staying and saying my wife said things that she does not have in her vocabulary.

It was like being in middle school allover again.

Did not need to do it to save money, just thought it would be fun. Did not turn out that way!

We make ends meet but we try to watch things like food costs (shop at Aldi when we can find one), stay monthly, watch the diesel usage (we don't like to sit in the campgrounds so we don't do to good on diesel). Wife is afraid to cut my hair so no savings there, but she trims her own. It a life of contradictions!

Even though DH is still bringing in a steady income, we still watch expenses to save more for upcoming retirement.

Eating in more than out. Monthly rates whenever possible. GS, Passport America and KOA if nothing else. Find a park as close to jobsite as possible so he can drive home for lunch (company picks up fuel). Watch for sales on personal or RV items. DH does most of our upgrades and repairs.

Fuel is one of the largest expenses so many fulltimers limit their mileage and fuel budget to a certain amount per month. Many also stay at commercial campgrounds at the monthly rate.

To cut down on camping expenses at public campgrounds, get a America the Beautiful Pass - $10.00 a year if you're 62 or older. Good for admissions to federal sites and half price camping at most national parks, national forests, BLM lands and COE parks.

Solar panels are wonderful and you can save a lot in campground fees by boondocking

Fuel & 'lodging' costs are the ones that are different than what we had before hitting the road.

Fuel.......about the only way to 'control' that cost is to stay parked longer.
We hit the road to travel and move frequently. So we travel only 250 miles and then plan our excursions by making 'loop road trips'

Campground costs.
We purchased a membership with Coast To Coast (C2C) & Resort Parks International (RPI) (BUY RESALE>>>>NEVER RETAIL!!!) Allows us to stay up to 2 weeks at each affiliate CG for $10/15 night. Some restrictions.
We also have Passport America. It cost $44/yr and you get a 50% discount of nightly fees. LOTS of restrictions...when/how long you can use it. Use it twice and you are even.
We stay at Corps of Engineer (COE) CG's (reasonable fees), fairgrounds/city parks and some boondocking.

We average roughly $400/450 month on 'lodging'

And we are debt free.........that is the greatest cost controller.

We save money on fuel and campgrounds. For fuel, we look for Walmart Murphy stations that sell diesel and that we can fit into. We have a Walmart Discover Card which gives us 5 cents off, plus cash back. We also have a Pilot Flying J card that gives 6 cents off. I check fuel prices for different states when we travel and if possible, wait for a cheaper price in the next state. It can vary by 20 cents per gallon due to taxes. For campgrounds, we use Corps of Engineers parks, we have a Passport America card for 50% off, and a Good Sam card for other discounts. When we look for a campground, we find several in the area, check their rates and then check rvparkreviews.com. We don't select the most expensive if we find another that fits our needs and is cheaper. Ask if they have weekly or monthly rates. We don't go to touristy areas in their peak seasons unless we really don't have another option. We don't eat in expensive restaurants. We find free things to do that don't cost money.
