Pen turning while on the road ?

No personal experience, but I did see a guy in Palm Springs with a miniature wood shop in one of the cargo bays of his motor home - he could slide it out and either work with it that way, or pull individual tools out and work with them on his picnic table. I don't know what all he had in there, or what he did with it, but I did see a small wood lathe and a scroll saw.

I've seen several RVers over the years doing pens. None in the past couple of years.

If I'm going to be doing work in my space, I will let the RVers in the spaces around me know and ask them to let me know if it gets on their nerves. I will check with the two closest every so often too make sure they are still OK with it.

I've even gone outside of the park to do some of the work. Find a nice shade tree and use cordless tools.

I don't have this hobby but thank you for giving me the idea! No, just kidding. If you have something you love to do that's portable and won't drive the neighbors nuts when you're parked near someone, by all means do it. Take it along! We (those of us on this forum) love our lifestyle, but it doesn't necessarily mean a 180 degree turn from when we lived in a stationary house. Even better if you have a market on etsy.

Thank you for the thought of asking my neighbors if it is OK and checking in with them.

Also the next time we go out I will have to be more watchful of what the other RVers are doing. I never looked before.

I often asked my neighbors if my knitting bothered them :) Seems the only ones bothered were those who didn't think to bring it with them :)

Seriously....bring your hobbies along....If I were to fulltime again, I would HAVE to bring my sewing machine :)

Bring your hobby along. I use a large Oneway lathe at home but have thought about using a small lathe to make pens or other small items while on the road. I find that I stay too busy with other things while traveling so I have not brought the lathe along yet. I do carry a nice sampling of gift items I have made just in case someone is interested. BTW, my name says it all. :B

When we traveled FT my GF knitted, crocheted and sewed then sold them at craft fairs.

She keep bugging me do find a hobby......suggested making planes, ornaments etc. out of aluminum cans.

I've thought about it many times. Now I turn on my ShopSmith, using scraps I pick up while traveling or scraps from home projects. I have found it difficult to sell my work on ebay or espsy or such, as there is so much competition. But it makes great gifts. Penn State, and other sites have really nice portable lathes. Turning is really quiet, so I cannot see how it would bother neighbors. And Like I said, it is fun to find local woods for projects. For now, I have my knife and a book on beginning whitling...but I haven't begun yet.

i have a dremel lathe. i made a carrier that this fits into. it has sides and a back to capture most of the shavings. it has a drawer under the lathe to carry the wood, tools, etc. I have used it in many places..... hotel rooms to camp sites. We are new to a travel trailer it will go with us while using the trailer. I make chess pieces, and many small turnings

We met a man a couple of years ago that had made a small woodworking shop in the rear BH section of his TT. There was a separate door at the rear. He did wood turning - bowls etc. that he sold.
