Regarding the original question--yes you can renew 6 months in advance. We just finished doing that last month as our BD's are in Aug and Sept, and we will be in Canada then.
Absolutely no issues--have your required ID (passport and SS card are all that's needed if you have them-along with filling out your affidavit in front of the clerk).
On the new SD law allowing on-line renewal every other time. Its my understanding this will be allowed only if you have gotten one license or renewal under the new Fed Id requirements. So if you are like us, and your previous lic was obtained prior to the Fed laws effective date (I believe sometime in "09"), you will still be required to do this one in person. The next one we do, we should be OK for on-line renewal. Incidentally, I can't find this written anywhere right now but did see this explanation by one of the SD mail services.
