Ten Year Rule

I have heard about, but never encountered myself, a rule at private campgrounds that your rig will be not be accepted unless if it is eleven or more years old.

I would think all that matters is the actual condition of the rig.

Is this a common situation?

Thanks.

I every once in a while I see a help wanted on one of the workamping websites stating that the applying camp host needed to have an RV no more than 10 years old. Several will ask for a picture of your RV as I'm sure they don't want their park represented by Cousin Eddies RV even if they don't care the age of their customers RV's.

Otherwise I've never run into it either but I'm not usually looking at that class of price range when I'm searching for campgrounds.

Interestingly I inquired about a hosting position at one of the more popular California State Parks for the winter and the ranger in charge requested a picture of my rig. So it may even happen at a public park.

neither my rig nor my tow vehicle are even close to this. I tow a 91 prowler with a 02 wj. id bet dollars to doughnuts both are in better shape than many 9 year old setups. I don't have issues because I tend to avoid places where people have sticks that far up their back sides
Q: Whats brown and sticky???

A: A Stick....

We stayed at a park in Moab, Utah. One half was very high end and had a two tier age restriction. Motor homes 10 years old or less, Trailers 5 years old or less to get a reservation. It was one of those that "sold" sites in the park (perhaps on a time share basis, but I cannot recall) and rented out sites for the "owners" when they were not occupying them. It was all concrete and very well landscaped.

I see this as a method of making it "easier" to keep unsightly rigs out of the park, avoiding telling an owner his or her unit does not measure up to their face after they pull up needing a site. It also makes the policy somewhat more consistent, less arbitrary and avoids "eye of the beholder" issues.

Needless to say, we stayed at the lower end section of the park, which was still nice. Our rig at the time was 8 years old, though in good condition.

The couple of times we've been asked, when calling for a reservation for a longer stay, is to send a photo. I do, they say no problem. And like has been said, if they are a strict '10 yr' place, they probably have a rate that we won't pay. There is always some place just down the road.

No, I wouldn't lie about it, although nobody is going to ask for your title anyway. But, If a place has a ten-year rule , then I probably wouldn't be welcome anyway, so I would just take my business elsewhere. and yes, we would be a bit over the rule with our 2005 rig. But its paid for, runs good, and has a lot of things that make it good for us.

Our coach is going to be 16 years old in January and I could care less about this restriction. My coach is always under the 10 year rule regardless of how old it is. It even looks better than some out there 2-3 years old!

I like COE's, State Parks, and every once in a while a regular RV park! I have no interest in a high end cocktail hour and bingo resort!

Campgrounds .. No , not so much . Rv parks ? Especially the nicer "resorts" , pool , activities rooms etc , near larger towns / cities ? yes. Since we started full time 4 months ago and moved our way across the us we have been asked ,when calling for day of reservations , 3-4 times.
. In much of the monthly rate info ( we don't stay monthly) of many popular parks you'll see 10-15 year rules. Most aren't strict on this if you provide a photo of your non cousin Eddie rig. We have tended to stay at slightly higher end parks so that tilts the scale some.
The conversation I had with one park owner ( manager)? Was that I'd see more of it as park owners try to fight a increase in run down live ins Those who don't move but can't afford or qualify for a apartment because they tore up their last place, his words not mine . His opinion was they are presenting drug and theft problem for management. I tend not to be that pessimistic but I'm not the management either. And I don't stay in Rv parks that look like that , making his point I guess.

I see the rule applied more frequently when folks want a long term site, either seasonal or year round. For shorter term stays it tends to be less of an issue other than to keep the really rough looking units out.

The 10 yr rule just gives them an easy way to exclude older rigs that may look really bad. Most likely they would not question a well kept nice looking RV older than 10 yrs if they looked out the window and saw it. But saves them having to tell someone that their RV looks bad and they should move on.

Yep. Keeps the junk out.
