Some ATV rules Help

If the sister state doesn’t allow any, or limited, ATV use on highways, that’s the rule(s) you must follow. Similar to double towing, weight limits, speed limits etc.

In Wisconsin we can use our ATV's on private property, ATV trails, and any public road that is posted as being an ATV Route. ATV's must travel with the headlight and taillight on and the ATV must be equipped with working brake lights.

No ATV’s on Florida roads.

States honor drivers licenses from other states. So if you have a valid vehicle drivers license it is valid in all the states.

This is not the same for motor vehicles. It may be legal to drive an ATV in one state and not legal in the adjoining state. Furthermore within a state there might be counties or cities that allow the ATV and other cities or counties that do not.

Most UTV's are licensed with a restricted plate that does not have to honored in another state. Some states offer reciprocity, but it is not mandated. My dune buggies have unrestricted plates that allow access in all states.

I guess you need to check with the state you plan to ride in noww in case they changed their laws from what they did in the past.

As others said, depends on the state. Here in CO, ATV/UTVs are not permitted on public roads anywhere (a few areas "look the other way"), even if it's licensed in a state that allows them to be licensed, like UT, WY or SD.

So, for example, my father in law has a RZR that has WY license plates and has all the equipment to be considered street legal in WY. But he can't come down here to CO and drive it on the public road legally. But he can go to UT, where it's also legal, and not have any issues.

Another thing to keep an eye out for is if you need to buy a UTV sticker in the state you're traveling to. We have to when we go up to WY even though we also have a CO one.

JAC1982 Great points I'll just add wear a helmet. It's not just for your safety it's for guy's like me that have happened upon a accident and you and your passengers are not wearing a helmet and with severe injures. I've have spent more then a few hours getting you help either to the hospital and getting you and your gear home. You burden others because you choose Not to wear a helmet .

It is not a simple thing. Especially the two states you picked for an example.

Washington ATV/UTV street legality is a jurisdiction decision. Many jurisdictions in central and eastern Washington allow some or all roads (except state/federal highways) to be traveled by ATV/UTV's that have undergone the RCW based conversion program, including the inspection/certification to state standards. Their is not reciprocal agreements in place for this program that I know about.
