If everything works or is repairable, there's no reason to junk a low priced rig. Many people (us included) would rather buy an older motor home than rent to experience the lifestyle before diving in for $20k-$2m.
Five years ago we bought a 1995 P30 chassis 28 footer. We did weekend and vacation trips for 2 years to see if we liked it. It showed us that a 28 footer would be too small for our eventual goal - traveling for 3-6 moths around the country.
We bought it for $12.5, I put about $5k into it, sold it 2 years later for $14.5 and it's on CL now for $14. The seller won't get that, but $10k is certainly reasonable.
A quick look at search all Craigslist shows an average around $8500. That's sounds like a good place to start.
