For future reference, not all rack and pinion slide systems have a clutch as DR describes. It seems manufacturers have found another way to save a $1 on don't use them. So the motor just stalls and a lot of force is put on those gears.
Unless you have a Schwintek Slide system, you absolutely DO NOT want to hold the slide switch once it has stalled.
