4000 hours on an Onan QD
The American Tradition 42 I am negotiating to buy has a 10kw Onan with pretty high hours on the gen, due to camping out at car races.
I'm told these gens can go reliably to ten thousand hours, but I know that won't happen without some maintenance along the way.
My intention would be to get the head pulled, clean out the carbon, replace the water pump(s), hoses, whatever wear items I can find.
What about the stop solenoid? Fuel pump?
I'm interested in creating a new baseline for service going forward, where I do hope I'll get many more hours out of the gen. It ran fine when I observed it. No smoke, odd noises, wavering.
I've rebuilt similar, older Onans for a larger boat, but would like your opinions on how to make this one more reliable. We run the gen pretty constantly; if it goes down, so does the fun.
thanks
