ac problems

While my ac was running the other day the power cut off and on several times right in a row. I don't have a surge protector yet. Now when I turn on the ac it makes a lot of strange rattling noises and seems to be getting slower as it runs. Did the power problem kill my 26 year old ac or is there anything I can do to salvage it?

And also make sure you have adequate AC voltage if using the same plug in.

I'll second looking at the startup capacitors. Usually if they're bad it will be visually obvious.

I would open it up and look at the capacitors. If you do, be real careful. They hold a charge for a while.
