Airbags for my 84 Allegro

Of course this will be a good test of the repair shop you choose to use. If they do a good job for you now at a reasonable price then you have found your repair shop for the future.

Paint the hole and mount.

easy job,put the new bag in hot water for a few mins,take out & roll or fold in three and put two hose clamps 1ea about 1 inch from ends,lube the bag w/vaseline,clean hole at bottom of A armtighten clamp so bag easily goes thru,move clamp down an inch or so slide in & so on,simple

Just clean up around the hole in the lower control with a wire brush or wheel to get rid of the flaky rust. It can scratch/score the rubber bags. I used liquid soap so mine would slide in easier. Also you could go this route to either replace the air bag or the spring assyClick here

I am assuming this is for a P-30 chassis. It is an easy job as others have said once you heat the bag, roll it up, and jack up the front to stretch the springs. Before you buy the bags I would check the ride height with the jacks up and see if your springs are shot first. On an 84 they are likely to be worn depending mileage on the weight of the chassis. There should be about 1 3/4 ins depending on what chassis you have. if you do not have the correct ride height I would just replace the front springs with HD springs and eliminate the bags completely. I replaced mine with the springs from Henderson, but Stengler and others make a good HD spring.

It's not a bad job - I've dropped the lower control arms on tons of cars. But the motorhome is so imposing. I don't like being underneath it! I have appropriate sized jackstands and a level, paved surface but it's still unnerving. Not that I could bench press a car if I had to, so what's the difference?

Thanks a bunch for the suggestions. I have never posted anywhere before and it is really cool that I got this great advice. I contacted a place in Cookeville which said they have done them and would size it up for me, but found a farm hand guy who is willing to try and replace the air bag. He says he has a huge jack and jack stands and is willing to give it a shot.

Hi: We replaced one of these this past spring in our '95 Allegro M28. We'll replace the other when needed or when we want to wallow around under the rig some more. ;-D It was a bit of a challenge but after warming up the bag itself (we wrapped it up in a heating pad on low for about 30 min.) then we used my Seal-A-Meal with the wine cork attachment to suck as much air as possible out of it, rolled it up and the hubs was able to wrest it into the spring. ;-) Fun, fun, fun but it saved us a bit of $. ;-)
