Awning leaking...

I have a 1999 Winnebago Brave.
The awning is fabric, not your typical banner looking plastic type awning.

At the top when it rolls up the last foot or so, it is covered with an aluminum wrap.

When we get in a heavy down-poor the water comes right through the awning. More so at the top where the aluminum wrap is sewn on.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

Thanks in advance.
Dave
  • Thanks for the input guys... I guess the problem is how do I get the scotch guard on the fabric that is under the aluminum wrap. The awning should be treated from the outside I assume.
The wrap seems to be sewn onto the awning.

  • I don't know the brand of awning on your Brave but on my Zip Dee awnings with an aluminum wrap the aluminium wrap is fastened to the another aluminum extrusion, mounted on the coach, with a special fabric hinge. I understand the fabric hinge is about an inch wide and has a large bead on both sides of the hinge. Another way to describe it is that it looks the number 8 with a one inch piece of fabric between the two loops. If that fabric is torn....thats where the water is coming from. The fabric hinge is pricey. about $4 a foot. You might go to an awning shop. They may have the material and the know how on how to replace it.

    Happy trails,
  • Wash it with Blue Coral Wash and Wax and Clorox equal parts, (about two cups each), to a bucket with water. The Clorox will kill spots and mold. The Blue Coral has 10% bees wax that will waterproof the fabric. That formula also will clean the entire outside, including the roof. Scrub it in with a long handled bristle brush wetting surface first and rinsing after entire sections are cleaned.
  • There is "awning tape" and "awning sealer" available at most RV type stores. Google it.
