Backup Camera

DH and I bought our first RV this past summer. Slowly upgrading and fixing as we go. The backup camera does not work in our DP. The screen up front comes on but there is nothing on it. We haven't really done much to investigate. Anyone have this issue? Thinking it may need to be replaced all together.
Thanks!
  • Just an FYI.
I was lucky to find a NIB (New In Box) camera/monitor! I replaced BOTH units, I did notice that my rear camera ALSO gets the power thru the coax line. Some have seperate power/video & some have both thru the same line.
  • Check the connections, at the camera, and the monitor first.
Ours started misbehaving a couple years ago. checked the camera, mounted up near roof. Connections were loose and some corrosion. Cleaned cleaned the plug connectors, and some dieletric compound to protect them and all was good.
  • Hi;
If you are still dealing with the rear view camera on your 91 AE,
    I have the same unit, and a 1991 Eagle J, too !
FYI,( #GP RV112 monitor, and #GP RVI11 camera). I removed the camera, checked the connector, and sent it out to AA CCTV, aka Nivie Electronics. See aacctv.com. Nivie, 140 58th st suite 7B Brooklyn
NY 11220......They did a great job, returned in one week !!!
They were sure the problem was in the camera, and repaired it by
replacing 15 capacitors, for $135.00 incl shipping. Shipping to them was $15.00 prox.
Put it back in and it works perfect !!!

  • This is my first response, I hope that I am doing this right. I had a similar problem, (Blank white screen) on the second day of a cross country trip. I had checked all of the connections and everything was tight. Was about to buy a new system, stopped at a friends in home in OK and got up and pulled the camera apart and found that the power wire had come loose from the circuit board. I suppose that the bouncing at the rear broke the connection. Soldered it again and has been working great.
  • On our DP, periodically the wires under the dash that plug into the camera vibrate loose. Unplug and plug them back in. Another place where the camera can come unplugged is at the camera. Our access is in the closet. Another thing that happens with our camera is that if the batteries are ever disconnected with the inverter off, our camera needs to be reprogrammed to accept the camera. We found the instructions in the user manual. You might be able to find the manual online if you have the model number. Ours is Pioneer.
  • If it's the original system (1991), it's living on borrowed time. You can get a good replacement LCD monitor, camera, and new cable for under $250 (probably much lower), and with some adaptation, you can probably reuse the existing cable.

I agree with fire up to check the cable connections first. Getting to that rear cable can be a pain sometimes.

  • It doesn't work at all. Just the screen lights up but no picture, if that makes sense. I will check to make sure the right button is selected.
Thanks both posts are very helpful. I will check it out tomorrow.

    Thanks!

    CindyLou82,
First off congrats on the purchase of your unit. They're a lot of fun and, can be a pain at the same time. As far as your rear view camera is concerned, don't jump to conclusions just yet as to it's a total loss. Yep, some of them get a bit cranky and some just need some cable ends cleaned. Sometimes it's just the fact that the cable fell out of the back of the monitor. If someone doesn't beat me to it, I'll dig up a source for info on them. It's a company that specializes in their workings and replacement parts etc.

By the way, does it work at all if you start the rig and put it in reverse?

  • Hopefully it is something simple like the A/B button (Camera 1 or Camera 2) on the wrong setting. My monitor will accept two cameras but I only have the rear view installed. If the A/B button is depressed I get a blank screen. YMMV. Good Luck.
