batteries

Hi,

I would not use group 31 batteries. They are a bit short on electrolyte to lead plate ratio.

I would buy group 29 batteries. They have nearly the same number of amp-hours and are much more "forgiving" to abuse.

My last new ones I bought at Patterson's Inter-state. It wasn't by choice I got them there. It was a matter of time in getting new house batteries. I bought some at Alleys generator shop, But found they were pretty pricey. It's been a number of years since I bought a couple from Action batteries, one lasted about a month and the other one little over 6 months then he wanted to just trade me for a couple more just like he sold me and I turned him down.
I have bought Inter-state at Sam's club till they quit handling them. But I do like inter-state, as the warranty works darn good for me.
I guess it pays to shop around. I sorta think you get what you pay for.

I have found East Penn battery manufacturing co make a true Deep Cycle battery in a group 31. It is Not a combination start/deep cycle. I installed 3 of them last year and have been very pleased with their performance while dry camping.

Napa also has GR 31 Deep Cycle batteries, don't know price and don't know quality.

I was wondering just where you found those batteries in Wichita, There are a couple of places I have bought batteries that didn't last long.

Sounds like you may have a shorted cell.....

Anyone know for sure the size group for a Workhorse W-22 8.1L I took measurements today and hit the charts, Thought it was a G-73 or 78.. Well a 78 is way too big and you guessed it 73 is too small.

I'm very surprised that your engine will even turn over, much less start with only 11.9 or 11.5 volts....this is way below 50% discharged....if fact they should be dead! I suspect that you have to use your emergency start switch to allow your house batteries to do the starting.

At 14.1 volts...that just means that your alternator is working real hard and doing it's job.

As Brett mentioned (who by the way is a diesel engine expert and you can take anything he says to the bank), it sounds like your chassis batteries are not getting charged while on shore power. A good way to check is after you connect to shore power, measure the voltage on your chassis batteries...they should be up close to or over 14 volts. If they stay at 11.9 or 11.5, your coach may not have the capability to charge while on shore power.

There are fixes for this... Trik-l-start (or amp) or a 120v battery minder (or tender).

i called action battery here in wichita falls and i also went to auto zone and he has deep cycle batterys group 31 for a 135.00 each i dont know about action battery

Are you planning on using them for starting or house batteries.

IF you are planning on using 'em for starting please tell me where you found 'em as I need to replace my chassis battery.

IF you want to use them as house batteries.. The question is a good one.. I am told G-31 is the most likely to need warranty adjustment of all battery types. What I do not know is if the person was talking through his hat or not (Telling a falsehood). I do knwo the G-31 AGM's I had.. Not so good.

Also I prefer DEEP CYCLE for house,, Marine/Deep cycle are starting batteries first and foremost and really are not all that good at Deep Cycle use.
