battery cables mixed up?

I have a 1997 35' Southwind Fleetwood with I think a Chevy 450/454 engine.
I think the last maintenance man may have crossed my battery cables. I no longer can hold the dash button to engage the coach battery to help start the motor. HOw can I tell which way to hook up my cables? I'm not sure he connected the lower coach battery back up correctly. Are there any pics to show how they need to be connected?
Thanks folks Randy
  • Hi guys thanks for the get back. Yes I do have other electrical problems I'm just now discovering. Does my battery in the coach have to be connected to run any lights in rv or will they run from 110 regardless if battery is connected or not. I now find I have no interior lights but I have a battery charger connected to the coach battery so I know I'm getting juice. I'm going to replace the motor battery it's no good and want take a charge. I also noticed the rear AC kicked on all by it's self and I had to flip the circuit breaker to shut it off. Don't know what gives.
    Thank you all Randy

Here is a pictorial from google images on how two 12VDC batteries are connected in parallel or two 6VDC golf cart batteries connected in series.

What I do here alot if I have removed my battery terminals for one reason or another is the find the word 'NEG' or symbol '-' stamped into the battery case and make sure this is the where the frame ground cable is going to.

It is very easy to get the cables mixed up and if that happens it immediately blow a in-line fuse close to the battery bank as well as two fuses back on the 12VDC Distribution Panel MARKED REVERSE POLARITY.

If you find these three fuses blown be sure to correct the bad wiring first before replacing the blown fuses as it will just blow them again...

  • Crossed cables wouldn't do that. Do you have any other electrical issues. Coach lights work etc. Most likely the solenoid the switch engages is bad.
