Bill stein shocks vs Monroe gas

Topic probably covered elsewhere, but here goes. What experiences have folks had replacing OEM shocks on a class C ( ours is a Fourwinds 31R) with Bilsteins or Monroe gas? Is the wait for delivery of Bilsteins (now late May due to factory backups) worth it?

Jim
  • I can only speak for the Bilsteins, They made a huge difference in the ride and roll control and porpusing over the OEM shocks that I had.

I also had to wait for 2 of mine. They seem to be very popular if you have to wait for them.

I have used them on my last Class A, Van, 2 Jeeps and 3 different Suvs, with great success and satisfaction.
  • My experience with Bilstein on 2 motorhomes was that they are a very stiff shock and I felt every crack in the road. I found the Koni shocks to give a much better ride. They seem to soak up the cracks in the road. Maybe a better way to put it is the Bilsteins seems to have a very sharp response to bumps and pot holes and the Koni seem to soften that sharp response yet maintain control.
  • My bilsteins made a huge difference in my class c. Just like iamichabod, I can only speak for the bilsteins. I would definitely recommend them.

Healy, I'm glad you got the bounce out of it with the new Bils, don't remember seeing that on RV.net but the one on CM indicates you're OK now. And that's GOOD! Have you ever weighed your coach? Would really like to see your actual Front and Rear weights. Pulled up the specs and it seems to me that your 209" WB should be enough to have a good % of total weight on the front.
Johnw, Alaska's worth the trip, that's for sure. Re: Hawaii, I wonder about those guys who say "Driven my RV in All Fifty States..."
  • I have experience with both Monroe and Bilstein. The shocks on my 2005 F250 diesel needed replacement, so having grown up in Monroe MI, I opted for the Monroe HD shocks. They were total junk. Really bad sloppy ride, almost like I didn't have any shocks at all. After a week of that, took the truck back to Tireman and they replaced them with Bilsteins. What a world of difference. Truck handled well, bumps were soaked up without any sharpness, I was totally satisfied with them.

Haven't tried Koni, but I hear they are a good shock.
  • I put the HD Bilsteins on my 93 F-350 chassis. HUGE improvement!
Best thing I've done to the coach as far as ride & handling. (Hellwig F&R away bars, air bags, Safe-T-Plus dampener & the shocks)

I let the PO drive it after I did the install (He's a friend of mine) and he couldn't believe the difference it made.
He told me he wouldn't have sold it if it drove this well when he owned it!

    Recommended.
  • Thanks for all of the helpful replies. Does anyone know what would have been the OEM shocks on a 2010 E450 cutaway sent to Thor for fitout as a FourWinds 31R?

    Thanks
