Bunk conversion

Hello everyone. I am starting to look at used class A’s both gas and diesel from about 02-10. The wife wants bunks for the extra sleeping area. I say we don’t need them, but you know who won that argument!!!!! LOL

My question is has anyone done a closet to bunk conversion that looks good and actually worked out? I’m finding a lot of units with the large bedroom slide with the closet in the slide. Obviously I would have to make sure they would be long enough. Some are bigger than others.
I want a DP the wife doesn’t care as long as there are bunks. Gas class A’s Are easier to find in the bunkhouse floor plan as DP’s didn’t get them till around 2010 or so, and those would be out of our price range.

And to my side of the argument my sons going to college this year and my daughter is a year behind. So not sure how much they would go with us, my wife just want the extra sleeping space.

And another thing, has anyone built a drop down bunk over the driver and passenger like the manuf. offers? Just another thought.

I can do this work myself so thy is a non issue.

Thanks.

I can't help with the conversion but we have a 2007 Winnebago Sightseer 35J with bunks, we've had it since 2006 and it's served us very well. Our boys are now 24 and 21, the don't go with us very often, but if they do it includes our sons gf now. My youngest likes to sleep in the top bunk, but we use the bottom bunk for storage. If the two of them go they use the jack-knife sofa. We also take a couple of those zero gravity lounge chairs that work well, plus one cot. We can set those up down the main aisle and it almost works out better then the bunks now.

All that to say I wouldn't build anything until you see the need.

I think you could add bunks to Monaco 40PLQ. There's 4' or 5' in the back that had a couple differnt configurations. Could make a nice bunkroom back there.

Buying used I’m not to concerned about resale value and adding bunks will more than likely make it worth a bit more. And yes it would be nice to have extra storage space. But I would like to see some pictures of some that have actually have been done.

I looked at one a long time ago where someone put the bunks in the living area. Now that didn’t look so good and to me it did kill some value. I think it’s all in how it’s executed.

One nice thing about the bunks. If there's nobody to occupy a bunk, then that becomes the largest indoor storage ever. Thats where we throw all the bags etc for the trip. Anything can be put in there as long as it's not too filthy. Be careful with modifications, it can really hurt the resale value of the rig.
