California speed limit for motorhome with toad

In California (and Oregon, and probably others) the freeways have signs that say something like, "All vehicles while towing, limit 55 mph". This is even when the posted limit is 65 or 70.

My motorhome tows a little pickup truck. I assume my speed limit is indeed 55. So my question is, have any of you gotten speeding tickets when going say 65 or 70 mph while towing?

I'll try not to be offended by your bad manners. Happy New Year to you, too.

Tell me, when you were working as a police officer, did you ever give a ticket to someone going one or two miles over the limit? Or was your policy to pull someone over when ten miles over? Do you know if there's a general policy among police officers as to how many miles over they let slide?

I need to get my vision checked again. Lived in Oregon all my 61 years and have yet to see a sign that says what you quoted.
Sometime in the last year, I think, California began putting up those signs, and maybe Oregon just began the same. Prior to that, the sign said something like, "Automobiles towing, maximum 55 mph". Have a close look the next time you drive on a major highway.

We never had quotas...we could write as many tickets as we liked....:B.

As for the out of state thing...court dates for us was overtime..extra pay...so that wouldn't hold water...

I gave more breaks to out of staters than locals. Locals should know the law, OOS might not. They might still get stopped, just not ticketed. Same goal accomplished with a warning that you get with a ticket. However, when stopped attitude does enter the equation..just sayin....Dennis

Simply because the CHP knows you will not contest the ticket in court.

Exactly - cops figure you're travelling through and won't hang around for a court date.

Yeah! And they have these Special Super Duper Fancy Radar Guns that actually can TELL you're an out-of-Stater at half a mile!

P.S.

I think you should know that they're also set to LOCK ON to any plate associated with anti-CHP posts here at RV.net, regardless of State-of-Origin. :B

I learned a long time ago that ignorance of the law is no excuse when standing before a judge in a court of law. I also learned that our 50 states are in reality 50 individual countries with their own laws, and their own constitutions. When traveling from one state into another, one needs to keep track of those laws. One of the tools I use is: http://drivinglaws.aaa.com/. It clearly states that when in California and towing, that the speed limit is 55 mph, unless you are in a area where the speed limit is posted as lower than 55 mph.

When driving a truck, or the motorhome in Calif on the open freeways I have never been bothered at 61-62 mph. I do not think I can ever get my wife to ever drive in Oregon or Washington again, as the only tickets she has ever received, were one in Oregon running with several cars with Oregon plates, and one in Washington running with a bunch of cars and a cop going the other way turned around and picked her out of the middle and gave her a ticket.

Oregon law is trucks 55. Non commercial vehicles ie. motorhomes with toads or trucks/cars towing trailers are allowed to go the posted speed for cars.

Out of State means it's much more likely that the officer will not have to appear in court on that particular ticket saving them wasted time and effort later.
What I post is my 2 cents and nothing more. Please don't read anything into my post that's not there. If you disagree, that's OK.
Can't we all just get along?

We in our 2002 Dodge ram diesel towing a Big Foot 25 had been running with 5 semis from Bakersfield all day at 65, I have 2 trucks in front of me and three behind, we come thru Mt Shasta and a CHP saw those Wa. plates and the red lights came on pulling us out of line. $385.00

You ran with the same five trucks, which apparently were all base plated in CA, from Bakersfield to Mt Shasta, around 500 miles, at 65 mph? Too bad you didn't have a dash camera. You could have submitted the adventure to Ripley's Believe It Or Not. :R

55 mph in California really works fine for me. I might move up a couple of miles per hour but usually less than 60.

My problem is, is that I will coast up to 70 mph going down those L O N G grades to take advantage of the momentum. I have never gotten a ticket but that's probably when they'll get me.
