Cameras for backup suggestions

Hi all

I’m researching adding side backup cameras to my class A, there is the factory one fitted and working for the rear and wanted to know your input if worth adding on a 40ft class a side cameras or upgrade to the rear camera

Thanks all
  • I’m looking at the ebay ones Wifi the issue is distance and picture quality
The form factor of the camera is large also
  • I have considered the Furrion camera system, but as you noted, quite expensive.
  • @skiatom researching and this one may be the easiest to install

    Bit pricy
  • This seems like a new one to the market

    Furrion Vision S Systems
  • Hi guys, thanks for the feedback, any pictures of the finished project, links of the wired. I’m always concerned adding holes to any Rv to make it water tight, I had thoughts to run from the luggage compartment cameras right and left to limit the holes. If you still know the model please post, this may be a long term project, any additions to the standard mirrors suggestions for backing into spots appreciated
  • I agree with Sandia Man. For most of the 12 years that we traveled in our Class A, I had aftermarket rear and side view cameras with separate 7 inch monitors for each view. The larger monitor he describes will work well, especially if you can have it near your line of sight when driving. A 7 inch monitor is too small to use for split screen use.

Having full time side view is very helpful to keep aware of what is in the lane next to you on each side. On my coach, it also helped in heavy rain as the wipers threw large amounts of water on the outside mirror but the side view camera still worked well.

I found the cameras/monitors were not as helpful when driving at night as the oncoming headlights tend to wash out the monitor and become too bright for comfort.

    Some considerations:
On the rear of the RV, a single camera with tilt & pan or two cameras aimed differently will let you check on the toad and tow bar, and then monitor traffic behind the RV. A camera in the front could be helpful if your monitor also has the dvr function.

If you are willing to run some wires and drill a few small holes, you can have a great system for $200 to $400.
  • When we purchased our current 40' class A about 18 months ago it had the original backup and side cameras that worked sporadically, when it did function picture was dull and somewhat hazy as video output quality was outdated by today's standards. Considered replacing it with same brand installed by Monaco at over $1K, I just was not impressed with their current equipment offerings.

As most of us do, I went online to Amazon weighing the pros and cons of wireless and wired multi-camera backup systems. After reading hundreds of reviews on both wired and wireless versions I decided with the length of our rig I would take the extra effort to install a wired backup camera system. Although wireless technology is constantly improving many reviewers had problems with distorted images, total blackouts, and lagging video.

At 1/3 the cost of factory system I installed 4 HD cameras and larger HD display that has a plethora of viewing options. Although I didn't need this function, all 4 cameras constantly record video to an included memory card, might come in handy one day. I wired system directly to 12 volts, just press switch to view all cameras in whatever configuration we choose. While underway, monitor displays rear camera on top half and side cameras on lower half for 360 view.
  • Sure I’m looking at a few, I don’t want to perforate the sides of the rig or run power, the non branded may work will let you know
  • Glad you posted this! I have a camera system for rear and turn signals that went kaput! Rather than spending big bucks to fix it, I’m thinking about getting a wireless one. Any suggestions or recommendations are appreciated!
