Carbon Monoxide Detector

So my 2 year old Costar carbon monoxide detector went down. Beeps twice for no reason every 30 seconds. I called the company and they are no help. It is a hard wired unit with battery backup. Anyone else have problems with this brand? Should I replace with another hard wired one or just put wire nuts on the exposed wires and go with a regular "battery only" detector??

This is the wall unit in the bedroom, not the detector in the kitchen.

I recently put in a fresh battery and I tried blowing it out with a air canister. The Date of Manufacture of unit was March 2011. This Costar model #12RV-DB is like hardwired into a circuit board looking thing in the detector (hence no easy plug in capabilities).

Thanks all for your input and help.

just be sure that the air canister is compressed air only, no propellant. I discovered that they don't like aerosol cans sprayed in their vicinity.

  • I see that Kidde has a new unit out that has a ten year battery and a readout display for $50. That may not be a bad way to go.
  • I installed an Costar OEM replacement purchased on Amazon. It had a date code showing it was only a few months old. It was a simple plug in installation as the wire harness connector was identical to the old one.

You said it is 2 years old but how long did it sit on the shelf.. Turns out those units often have an "End of life" timer, about 5 years as I recall, and when it times out.. That's what mine did.
