check engine light

2004 winne adventurer 38R, 8.1 vortec workhorse. stopped for fuel and check engine light came on after restarting engine. about 75 miles from home in NC. I could not find anything wrong, no reduced power mode or any warning on gauges. along the trip The genny stopped running at just above 1/4 tank. after refueling genny start right up and we continued the trip home. I stopped and removed gas cap and reinstalled until it clicked a couple of times. No apparent problems yet. who scans these computers or ECM or whatever there called that controls the light. Don't know what to look for? any ideas? light still on after 2 restarts. Is there a resetting procedure?
  • Finaly scanned the mh. This am I went out and started it and the check engine light went out on its own. Then I scanned it and P0102 was showing on scanner. MAF sensor or low air or voltage. Anyay I cleared the code and I will see if it returns again. Possibly with lower fuel and high temps and climing the mountain at fancy gap with higher rpms Changed the fuel mixture and there for the code popped up and check engine light came on. I guess will see. Thanks for all the input .
  • If you have a smart phone or a tablet with bluetooth, you need one of these and an app called Torque which is another $5. With this device and the app you can read and reset codes. You can also have a custom set of gauges and all for less than $20. These work great and I highly recommend it.
  • You can buy a check engine code reader at most any auto parts store. But the ScanGauge is really nice and tells you lots more about what is going on with your engine.
  • I had the same thing happen some time ago. Found out that even a change of gasoline brands can cause the ECM to activate the check engine warning. After about 150 miles everything reset.
From what the Workhorse tech support told me, it is not all that unusual depending upon the additives from gas refineries. It can take a while for the ECM and MAF to adjust.
  • You can go to just about any auto parts store and they have a reader that can give you the trouble code. The once you have the trouble code, look it up the the internet. The diagnosis will be vague, but ti will point you in the right direction. The reader will also let you reset the system.
