Class A vandalized on roof

Our RV is parked on our property & someone went up on the roof & threw a cement block into the roof at some point this Winter. It is a 34' Class A with a rubber roof. During that time, the roof had major leakage which we only discovered last week. The TV over the dash is barely hanging on in the cabinet, every electronic thing we have is right where the leak started. We drained about 3 gallons of water out, there's mildew on the ceiling, the water dripped down into the dash, & we have no idea what that could've done to the automatic levelers, or anything else in the dash.

My question is, do any of you know how much it costs to replace the rubber roof, the entire headliner, probably most of the wood, all the cabinets in the front of the coach, all the electronics we lost, the tv, & the dashboard as well. The water leaked down to the carpet & into the linoleum flooring by the entrance to the coach. Needless to say, it is a royal mess!

It's a 2005 Landau 34' with 2 slides & only 23,000 miles on it. Blue books around $35,000 or so. And thank you for verifying what I thought was correct - the rubber roof deal - I cannot believe this yahoo thought a partial replacement would be just fine. Our insurance is with Madison Mutual. One of the claims supervisors even had the audacity to suggest we'd thrown the brick into our motorhome roof. Seriously? We love that thing!! It's paid in full, there's no reason on earth that we'd want to ruin it. This would probably be the last Summer that our kids (15 year old twin boys) would even want to go with us on extended vacations - no WAY would we risk that for anything! Once they get their driver's licenses I'm sure we'll hardly see them at all. Our insurance agent is not pleased with any of this but is remaining professional about it & has been pushing them to do the right thing. We'll see what happens.

Read your insurance contract to make sure they cover vandalism. Some policies may not. At least you would know where you stand if you file a claim.

1. You just joined. You need to post Year/Brand/Model and mileage of the Motorhome to get any real help about cost
2. EPDM(Rubber) roof's are NEVER--NEVER partially repaired. The complete roof and under decking has to be replaced. Reputable Insurance companies pay for that. Average cost JUST for the roof repair will be in the $6000 to $8000 range at average $150 labor rates
3. To the other poster, Insurance adjusters do not get spiffs for reducing payouts. Now, Independent adjusters YOU hire to get a more fair settlement from the insurance company on a claim may charge a percentage of the extra money they get you.
4. Since you state the Insurance wants to pay for partial, I will bet it is Geico or Progressive as they are the biggest pains to deal with on RV claims.
5. Your other high cost item will be the front area where the dash/TV is. Since the wood has rotted, rebuilding that front cap area will be a nightmare in cost. Odds are the front cap will have to be pulled to do the job correctly.

File a claim. This is going to take very deep pockets to repair. Depending upon the type and age of the RV it could be totaled. You likely have a very serious disaster on your hands.

So sorry to hear about this. Just when you think you've heard it all...hard to imagine why someone would do that. You just never know what some people are capable of. Makes me glad I live out in the country and my motorhome is stored in a shed.

I hope your insurance carrier changes their minds and ends up taking care of you. Insurance is a frequent topic here with people asking about costs and service. Unfortunately, companies that don't want to pay out fairly are out there.

Thanks to you all for your ideas, suggestions, & comments. We asked for someone from a local RV dealership to come out & supplement the first adjuster's estimate. We'll see how that goes.

Please learn from this - always check your rig during the off-season. I've been camping my entire life & have never had this happen til now. Fingers crossed we get someone who knows what they're talking about this time.

It is my understanding the insurance adjuster gets a cut from what the insurance pays.. the less the insurance pays, the more he/she gets. Whether true or not, I certainly would not accept first offer and also ask for another inspector by your insurance company.

I would go back to the insurance company and ask for another inspector. Looks like the one you had doesn't know beans from bisquick

Please folks - check on your RV regularly in the off-season. Whether on your property or in storage.

Don't assume that it will make it through the winter without issue. Check and make sure it's OK.

We have NO idea why someone would do what they did. We live in a small town near Peoria & let's just say the criminal element is working it's way into our area, sadly. We called the insurance & so far, they've come up with $11,000 in damages BUT they only want to pay for a partial roof repair - it's a one piece rubber roof - how is that even possible? They also only want to pay for a partial headliner. Our TV was literally sitting in water, along with the antenna thingy, a dvr, & whatever else is up there in front but the adjuster didn't really address the electrical issues we could have from the water damage to the dashboard, not a word about the flooring which is bubbling up, nothing about possible mold, the thing stinks to high heaven because of mildew & no mention of cleaning anything either. Oh & the soonest we could actually get it into a repair person around here is August at the earliest. Our whole Summer is ruined by then without our motorhome. GRRRR!!!

I agree with azrving. Why would anyone haul a cement block up the ladder, if your RV has one, just to throw it down on the roof. There are plenty of windows, doors, and numerous other ways to damage a RV without trying to haul a block to the roof. I suppose it is possible that a large strong individual could throw one from the ground although I know I couldn't get one half way up.

The roof could surely be $5k alone. Why in the heck would someone go to the point of hauling a cement block up there to damage it? You have some crazy crackheads around there or you really ticked someone off. Not saying you did anything wrong to tick someone off. Now days they could just be jealous of what you have. Sorry to hear that and hopefully the insurance treats you fair.

Police report and insurance claim. See what happens. Roof is not the only problem I see... all the water damage and mold may be far worse than the roof.
