Coach Battery

I have a 2011 Greyhawk 31DS. What would cause the coach battery to not get a charge when the engine is running?? It just started this. If I plug in or if the generator is running, it will charge. I checked the fuses.

Be sure to use the links on the left side.

The disconnect relay may be on the left front inner fender.

Hi,

If the Chassis is a Ford, then it is most probably a solenoid. The OEM that comes from Ford is weak and can easily have burned contacts. Mine lasted less than a year. I replaced it with one that had a much greater amperage capacity.

Mine has the solenoid type battery isolator in the engine compartment near the chassis battery. A wire comes from the battery positive, goes thru a 50A fuse then to the solenoid. A wire then goes from the solenoid to the coach battery.

The solenoid is operated by a wire from the ignition switch. If the solenoid coil, the small terminals, is getting 12v when the ignition switch is on, then either the fuse, solenoid or the wiring is at fault. Probably the solenoid.

Like Wolfe I would initially focus on battery isolator. In my rig its a simple solenoid type initialized by turning the ignition key - loose wire, bad solenoid etc. In solenoid type isolators sometimes a simple rap on the housing will jar it loose.

Determine what kind of battery isolator you have.

Could be diode-based or solenoid based.

Either can fail. Let us know which you have (just follow the large wire from alternator B+ terminal to locate it) and we can give you troubleshooting directions.
