Cold Weather Traveling

Hello to all,

I need some helpful information regarding traveling in cold weather. We are planning on leaving Colorado and heading to Las Vegas on the 1st of March. Where I'm at in Colorado it is suppose to be in the 50's during the day all next week and in the low 30's at night. We plan on staying in Gallup,NM where it will be again in the 50's during the day but in the high 20's on the early morning of the 2nd. My question is...if I de-winterize before we leave Colorado will I be safe putting a little water in the fresh water tank for flushing the toilet and perhaps washing dishes until to get us to Vegas where the night temps are in the high 40's.

Thank you and have a good day.
  • We have stayed in ours at 14 and snow with no complaints. You won't run into any problems as long as you ahve some heat in Galoop! Have'nt been there in 10 years, went to ABQ and Creede last summer.
  • Thank you all for the replies, they will make the DW feel more at ease, something less she will need to be concerned about.

    Rich
  • and the tanks are heated.

Sounds like you have a non issue. If you need a little coach heat in the night or early morning, the tanks will get a little heat as well. I would just go and worry about more important stuff.

    Hi,

We need more information about the RV. Are the tanks enclosed? Is the basement heated?

The RV is a 2004 National Sea Breeze and the tanks are heated.
  • On our trip from upstate NY to Florida in January, we experienced temps as low as -2 deg F with no significant problems. I'd suggest filling the fresh tank, rather than just adding a little water. The mass of the larger quantity will hold the warmer temps much longer, even if the heat fed into the bay from the furnace can't hold the temp above freezing. At the temps you've mentioned though, the bay temps will stay well above freezing. If you want to monitor the bay temp, buy a cheap remote reading thermometer and stick the remote sensor in the bay by the fresh tank.
  • It is better to fill the fresh water tank to the top than to just put in a few gallons. We travel a lot in the Winter and have never had problems with a full tank in weather down to zero.
From our experience Gallup, NM generally gets a little colder and windier than the surrounding areas.
  • I would. For the most part you really only need to worry about hard freezes. I have camped for days when the night lows were in the 20's with no problems. It's the driving in freezing temps that I'm not crazy about. The big windshild gets really cold.
  • Hi,

  • I wouldn't worry about those temperatures. Every thing should be fine in New Mexico. If you have the furnace on, you will have nothing to worry about. We do a lot of travel in the fall when temps get down even into the teens and have no problems.
