If you have to replace them every year, check to see if the grommets that the string slides on fell out. With no grommet the string will fray quickly. I reinstalled my grommets and used waxed nylon braided line as a replacement line. The waxed line slides easily over the grommets and prevents the line from fraying.obgraham wrote:
Once you re-string the day/nites with something that slides properly (teflon covered fishing line) they work just fine.
What size line, and can you recommend a brand? I usually have to restring my blinds annually... - Alan_HepburnExplorer

I used 60-70 pound test braided/teflon covered fishing line. A big roll at BassPro is under $15 and will do dozens of these. It is very strong, slides easily, and will resist the fraying at the joints that messes up the strings.
There's several online videos of how to do it. Fussy, but once you do one, the rest are easy.
Thanks! I'll be heading over to the local Bass Pro when the state releases us from house arrest...
I've been using the cord that is sold as replacement cord, but it still needs to be done almost annually! - John_WayneExplorer IIX3 mini blinds an added plus you can get air flow with mini blinds you can't get with shades.
- supercubExplorerAnother reason I'm looking for alternative to the day/night shades is, my are stained at the bottom, where one usually grabs them. I don't care about day shades, I've never used that portion. So I'm just looking for something to cover the windows and are easy to install and won't rattle going down the roads.

I haven't found a reasonably priced replacement, but the newer colors also don't go, and most seem to have white for the day shade. Ours is a medium sand color with cream for the day shade. I don't really want stark white.
- GaryGusExplorerWe used roll-up shades on 10 windows. Not as cheap as blinds, but can be ordered to match interior. Easy one-touch up and down.
