Dometic Awning

On my 2013 Itasca 26 HE the awning motor burnt out, so instead of going to the dealer I ordered and replaced the motor everything is now working fine. I called Dometic to see if my repair would be covered under warranty since there is a two year warranty on the awning. I was told the awning was not cover because the warranty ran out on the awning since it was manufactured Oct. 19, 2012. The issue I have is that I bought the brand new motorhome Mar 1, 2014. So if you buy a Dometic product the warranty begins when the part was manufactured not when you bought the new unit. I was told to go to Winnebago or write a letter to Dometic head office to try to get to get someone to honor the warranty. So beware check the dates on any Dometic product since the time on your warranty starts from the time it leaves the factory. That"s a pretty good scam Dometic has going on the RV owners. I know my chances are of someone stepping up to honor this warranty are slim to none, just a few words of caution to others check those dates.

I have noticed Canadian RV owners are treated differently up here in the North. This is the reason I try to get my service work done south of the border if possible. Sometimes our warranties up here in good old Canada last till the tailights disappear going out the driveway!

Very few OEM's and appliance suppliers will pay or warranty a part for a retail customer to install. You MUST go0 thru an authorized Dometic service center. I have NEVER had Dometic ask for the build date and just got off the phone with them. They go by the retail sold date ONLY. They also stated, that since you did the work yourself and bypassed the warranty procedure, they would deny the claim or reimbursement for the part. Doug

That's good to know. So I suppose it works the same on any Dometic product, that makes all the Dometic warranties pretty useless! Unless you are just lucky!
Wonder what other companies do the same?

If that's their policy - it sucks. Most start the date of purchase. Some units can sit a year on a lot.
