Electrical issue on National RV Seaview

Have 2001 National Seaview.
Issue we are having.

Plugged into shore....batteries will not stay charged.
Went Camping....first day Rigs lighting and electrical seems fine. Microwave working on shore, but lights soon dim and ALL batteries lose charge. We charged back up and drove home, batteries stayed charged by the engine charging them. Used generator and seems to all be good there. Got home, plugged in and same issue, batteries died and no shore power to lights, still to microware.

replaced converter, new deep cycle and car batteries... still not working.

Looking for help... could this be a solenoid?
  • I agree with MrWizard, there is something strange going on when it charges the batteries on generator but not on shore power. I would look into that.
  • Normally, there is a circuit breaker between the output side of the converter and the batteries. It may be an automotive type of breaker. Follow the wiring from the output side to the batteries; the breaker will be in this line.

  • something ODD about charging on generator but NOT on shore power
sounds like one LINE of the transfer switch has a stuck contact or burned out

i wonder what else is NOT , working on shore power
  • OP said he replaced the converter and batteries and still has a problem. Have you checked the wiring on the load side of the converter? The wire going to the 12 volt panel and the batteries could be bad or corroded. I have seen 12 volt cables that look perfectly fine, have a high resistance and be bad.
  • Do you have a separate breaker for the converter if so is it on? Another possibility is there a battery disconnect and if so is it on.
  • If DC side doesn't work when your plugged into shore power then failing converter would explain much ... when converter goes south you can't charge your batteries and even being plugged into shore power won't save you. Might be something as simple as converter fuse - but since you say it works sometimes my guess the converter itself has an issue.
