Emergency Start Switch

I found a switch on a pillar behind the drivers seat that is marked as "Emergency Start". What is it for and what does it start?

mod ed: removed all caps in title
  • We have the emergency start switch as well, but I understand the thin guage wiring & solenoid cannot handle the amperage for a real "Jump Start". You need to hold the switch for a long time in hopes the dead battery is taking the charge properly.

    So....

Just in case the dead battery doesn't hold a charge, I carry extra long jumper cables that reach from the chassis battery to the house batteries. So far I've used them only to help other campers.
  • Since the trigger for the relay connected to the switch is fed off the house batteries, if the house batteries are the ones that are low, and the generator starts from the house batteries (ours does), there at some time might not be enough voltage in the house batteries to trigger the relay, so it might not work that way. Been there, done that...

It does just what everyone has said, but I've never seen one behind the seat, most of them are on the lower left side of the dash.

I have seen Gulf Stream mount the emergency start switch in trim panel around driver side door. Mine is mounted to right of instrument cluster under radio.

  • As mentioned it ties all the batteries together to give you an extra boost in starting the engine. It can also be used as a boost to start the Generator if the house batteries are low.
That switch saved my behind more than just a few times.
  • Thank you for your help. Also to RetSgt 7114 my motorhome is a Gulf Stream Yellowstone.
  • The switch connects the two sets of batteries together. When your starting battery is too low to start your engine, you can push that button and hold it down and you will be able to start the engine. Once the engine starts, release the button.

    Ok?

  • It should be the switch that allows you to use the house battery to start the rig if the chassis battery dies.
