Exercising the generator while covered.

During down times I keep my Winnie totally covered. When I do my monthly exercising of the generator I always uncover the unit in order to have all the various vents open while I use the water heater, frig etc in order to put a load on the generator. Is this really necessary or is there some way to put on a load without needing to uncover the unit?
  • Thanks to all, I think heater when covered and AC when uncovered will be my plan.
  • Heaters when covered and AC in summer months. Always kind of nice to heat the inside a bit in winter and set at the table drinking a warm coffee and remember the summer trips..
  • I use portable electric heaters for a load when exercising our genny during the winter months. Our rig stays uncovered during the active camping season and use our AC to load down genny during exercising routines.

Thanks, I will try that the next exercise date.

  • Certainly you have to have the generator's cooling vents open.

You don't say what rig you have or what generator-- it may have cooling air enter and exit through the bottom in which case you have no cover to remove.

Clearly you will need the exhaust external to the cover.
