external propane tank connection

I tried to search, I cant be the first person to have this question...

I have seen Class C rv at long term camp grounds hooked to large external LP tanks. what type of connections or hoses do I need to be able to do that? I ask because I do not feel comfortable having only one tank on my motor home. the gage inside says I have 2/3 remaining but the gage on the tank says I have 1/4 remaining. I carry a 20lb bottle with me, for my camp chef gas range, and would like to use it in an emergency if I needed heat or hot water while camping and did not want to un-camp to go in to get a fill up.
  • I added a 15 foot hose to provide fuel for my bbq. it plugs into a fitting I installed onto the tank line, it is similar to an air line hook-up. Go to a service center that sells propane, one of the larger ones that is well known, and have them supply you with what you need. i am a complete DIY guy but some things I leave to people that deal with this every day. My hoses were built as I waited, all the proper fitting were purchased and I left knowing that it was done properly. I researched at hardware stores but it would have been piece meal, not ok with me using propane. I purchased a new portable bbq for 99 at Costco and its going on it's maiden voyage to the races this weekend.
  • Check with a RV Supply/Repair Shop. There is a item called Extend a Stay. Which is a kit that screws into your gas line and regulator. It also comes with a hose to attach to a portable tank. If an Extend to Stay kit will not work in your Rig, either a RV shop or Propane service center (as klutchdust recommended) can build you one.
  • Since you are in DFW they have the hose at Camping World. :) (Online may be a bit cheaper)
