In a previous post someone mentioned that they ordered a Newmar and one of his options was a Power Tek generator. My question is are there more options available that aren't published in the Brochures? Is this something available on a Dutch Star or is it only available on the three Luxury Motorhomes?

Thanks for you input.

We would highly recommend you take the Newmar factory tour and talk to the sales dept. When we ordered our 2004 Dutch Star the sky was the limit as far as special options. (We only did approx. 100 changes 🙂 some very minor as to where to place electric outlets and lighting) Newmar builds each unit according to the future owner's specifications and doesn't start building until the request is in. They don't build ten alike and set them on dealer's lots. So, yes, have them build it the way you want. We love our Newmar!

Unless they've changed since my just before the market collapse factory visit, Newmar is pretty much hand building from middle range (e.g. DutchStar) on up, so custom equipment is not that much of a problem. Easy if it is something they regularly do, more effort if it is something they'll have to go looking for.

It is probably better to first talk to a factory sales rep, before ordering through the dealer, unless you have a salesman at the dealership willing to do the work for you. Not a lot of confidence on that. I've found that RV (and car and truck) sales people work a lot harder trying to sell you something from the lot, or at a regional dealer's lot, than they will putting together a special order. They have bills to pay, kids to feed, and what you can close on NOW is money to them NOW, not 3-6 months down the road when your special build comes in.

For you, what it means is that you also have to wait. This is a tricky time of year, close to the end of manufacture for 2014 model year, factory will be building 2015 examples for the Louisville show, then there may be a short overlap of both 2014 and 2015 production, but likely no 2015 brochures or sales information for consumers until after the new models are presented to dealers at the show.

The price of our custom order was no different then buying off the lot.

I can not see a reason to compromise on that much money.

It is well worth your time to price it out.

I've been hearing that there is a dealer that's doing 32% off ordered coaches. Not the dealer I bought from.

Thanks Wallynm. I was looking at the floorplan on the Dutch Star 3736 and would like to replace the DS couch with two recliners or euro chairs. I would also like them to run and electrical outlet on the wall behind behind it. Of course I could do that after I buy the MH, but then I'd have the original couch to deal with. It would be easier if I could get it done up front if they did not charge an arm and a leg to do so.

I am the one one that posted that we ordered a Power Tek at the factory techs suggestion and yes in our experience Newmar will provide you with what I suggest are non standard upgrades if you ask. We discussed several items over several days before placing our orders through a Newmar dealer. If you have just a general idea of what you want then discuss it with them.

As to blanket statement that Power Teks are loud take it with a grain of salt. Some are and some or not. It depends on the year model and installation. Power Teks generally run at a constant RPM and Onan, BTW which is owned by Cummins, do not not. We do not consider our unit to be loud and have been very happy with it.

At one time Power was purchased by Cat and they may have sold that business when the got out of the OTR business.

So as I first suggested call the factory and ask. Newmar does not manufacture spec units as they have a hard order sheet in hand before the build starts.

Just bought a Lifestyle 5er and ordered a residential frig at the Hershey RV show. The res. frig was not listed as an option but the factory rep said it was a new option. Therefore I would contact the manufacturer.

Can't say about swapping gennies, but there is a lot of things that Newmar will do that aren't on the order sheet.

We just went straight to Newmar, then gave the build number/sheet to dealers for pricing.

If you want custom order, you'll get the most knowledge by going to the factory.

Shop carefully. 10 years ago, PowerTek RV generators were not in an enclosure and you got to listen to all the engine noise and a much louder exhaust system then an Onan. Blue Bird and Country Coach used a lot of PowerTeks and they were noisy. Hopefully things have changed and the noise has been reduced. Flack jacket on.

PowerTech APU's are custom built for OEM's. Their main market is the Marine industry. So, the OEM specifies what they want on the APU. Like extra quiet housing and even if there is a 12 volt charge module. MOST RV Powertech APU's do not have a 12 volt charge module. You can add one very easily. But, yes, certain models were very noisy, but that is the fault of the Motorhome maker and not PowerTech. Doug

Thanks Doug,

The only PowerTechs that I have experienced were in Country Coaches and Blue Birds. They didn't have the "extra Quiet" housings and were annoying. I would expect those price range coaches would be better.
Is the "quiet housings" on Onans, for the last 15 years optional?

I think the Onan is just fine. I was actually asking if there were any options that weren't listed online or in brochures. Thanks.

Strange....My 8KW PT isnt that noisy and I sleep on the sofa right about it!!?? As far as a racket outside that was caused by the spark arrestor ( an abortion if there ever was one) and 75% of the noise went away after removing that device. * 2 screws!!

I wasn't asking about Power Tek per se, instead I was just asking if there were options available that aren't listed in the brochures. I wouldn't select a Power Tek even if they recommended it.
