It does have a sensor, but it was shut at the time.

Does it have a rain sensor? Ours will sometimes close in a heavy dew. They have great customer service.

Had trouble with mine, called the factory and got what I needed - no charge.

lifetime warranty don't buy anything from anyone else.

Might be the "Plunger" switch that activates the fan when the cover is opened. Possibly something is shorting that switch? Call the manufacturer's help line. They were great when I had a problem earlier this year. Sent me parts at no charge.
