First Cool Weather Outing -Off To The Big City

While we’re quite experienced with cool/cold weather camping in a 5th wheel (just finished 3 weeks boondocking in the mountains). This will be our first cool weather trip in our new (to us) 10 year old class c. Though we don’t expect any thing below single digits (10 F here now) it will should show it’s weaknesses....if any. We had a couple of very short stays during the summer months, but now it’s time to use it for what we got it for...short winter camping trips!!

Spent yesterday afternoon, “de-winterizing”, filling the water tank, flushing lines and “firing up” the water heater. Now it’s off to the city for a couple of days Christmas shopping and our quarterly trip to Costco and Sams. A little boondocking ( no motels and home cooked meals) at Cabela’s.....now we’re really camping! ;)
  • We've had mixed success at Cabela's, you may want to confirm the amenities before arriving and have water fill/ alternates in mind- but certainly a good place to park while shopping. Enjoy the "outdoors"!

We have fresh water filled, propane, and a genny to keep batteries charged, so it’s like a summer camp out....only cool!

    And we’re Christmas shopping! :B
  • The experiment a failure.... a lot warmer than expected. Test Invalid! Maybe Christmas week in south-west Wyoming will be a true test!
  • That doesn't sound like a terrible sort of failure to experience, luckily. There are quite a few people who would look at you as though you had three eyes if you told them your camping trip was not a success because the weather was nicer than you anticipated.
  • Sounds to me like a great trip / experience made even better by taking your home with you!
  • Tualatin Oregon Cabela's was not RV friendly to me last year. My C and pulling a 20ft. trailer required me to park using multiple spaces, I parked way out of the way, came out and security had posted a ticket and nasty warning hand written about parking in their lot.
I walked back in to the store, after purchasing a nice amount of clothing, and handed the notes to the manager. This year I passed right by their store.
  • As far as the travel and shopping....great! But, really wanted to test it’s wintering capabilities. Propane consumption, battery life, making sure “nothing” freezes on a cool night. Really wanted to test it down to at least zero...that way we get no surprises when boondocking! This “global warming” can really be a problem! :(
