First trip impressions and looked for suggestions

In the early spring, this year, we purchased a 2003 RT 200. After some necessary mechanical work and a new house battery, my better half and I took it on its inaugural trip -a 2500 mile trip around the Canadian Maritimes, including the Cabot Trail with all its sharp bends and steep inclines and declines. The RT performed flawlessly; humans less so -like my usually better half leaving her purse behind at a Tim Horton's and only realizing this some 4 hours travel time later...it was recovered and I enjoyed being the "not guilty" person for nearly the next 24 hours!

There were a few minor nits, and would welcome suggestions. First, the locking mechanisms on the outside storage lockers seem weak and difficult to close. Has anyone replaced these? I will look at marine stores barring other suggestions.

Second issue was the table. Ours is a straight and narrow design (no folding sides)that was ok but not really comfortable. I will likely try and design/build a new table - any suggestions are welcome -do folding sides work well?

The last issue is the secondary passenger seat on the outboard side. While the secondary seat behind the driver is useful, the outboard seat is not. Has anyone removed this seat and used the resulting space for better purposes?

Overall, the trip was wonderful and the RT was great. Hooking and unhooking was a breeze, and we found the RT to be quite forgiving on uneven sites...or perhaps we were too tired to care...and I never had to use my Lego leveling blocks.

Thanks in advance for all thoughts!
  • Thank you all for your responses. Good to know others have had little "experiences" leaving things behind!

Have joined the suggested Facebook group. Lots of info there!
  • Congratulations on your first trip and to Canada too!! Love the Maritimes and people. Consider coming west and visiting Vancouver Island where there are so many parks, RV resorts and place to stop over per square KM (miles in USA) that you don't have to drive very far. ANd, we have coffee shops called "Serious Coffee" which compares in my view to Seattle's Best which is great. Free Wifii too. Happy trails.

  • Glad you had a good trip. We did a loop of Nova Scotia a few years ago and people told us we just had to go visit Newfoundland. We were already very far from our home near Houston, TX!
  • Never have that problem. My wife prefers to stick money in her pocket and leave her purse on her seat in the van where a thief could see it , break the, window and run off with it.

That is so funny. It happened to my wife about 12 years ago also on the east coast. The only problem was that she did not realize until the next day 24 hours later . She had left it hanging on her chair in the restaurant. Drove back 500 miles to pick it up.
  • many motorhomes use cabinet type latches like found at rona/ home depot.

mine benefited from a little lube in the locks and the latch/catch mechanism. look to see that the catch isn;t gouged and is lined up.

table...we don;t use ours- we just use lap-trays.
the RT cloverleaf table is a nice design though

and some owners pull the driver's side seat and replace with an armoire.

our pleasure way just has the 2 front seats which swivel- that gives more room in the "coach"

roadtrekchapter.org has good classifieds ( just saw an ad there, someone is looking to buy a 3rd seat in dark-aqua)
  • You may want to join the Roadtrekking group on Facebook. I have seen the topic of replacing an unneeded seat come by many times with pictures of what people have done...
