Fuel gauge not working

Hello. I have a 1996 Monaco Dynasty. The fuel guage is not registering and is shown as beyond full even though I know it is not due to the last time I filled the tank and the distance I have driven. Does anyone know what it takes to fix this problem? Thank you in advance.
  • Thanks I will check it out and giver a try tanks for the info:)
  • This is more than likely a ground problem behind the dash. Most panel builders ground the gauges by leap frogging their ground wire from gauge to gauge and then to a chassis ground or at least what they hope is a chassis ground. Locate the fuel gauge ground wire behind the dash and connect on to the gauge and run it to a good known chassis location. Clean the paint, rust, and other crud off of the area and attack the new ground or run directly to a chassis battery ground if convenient.
  • I just replaced the sending unit on my Newmar DP. There is a port in the front passenger side storage compartment that opens directly to the sending unit. It was an easy replacement. The hardest part was stuffing my big ol' butt into the crawl space.

YMMV depending on brand and model.
  • I have a 96 Bounder and my fuel guage bounces around from full to half back to 3/4 so cant ever tell how much fuel is in it. so would that prob be the sending unit, and are they hard to get to ?
  • If it goes to full when you turn on the power then you have a ground{short} problem. Most likely the sending unit. If it fall to empty even with the power on then it is a power problem.

I gave up on mine and now reset the trip odometer and a trip summary in my monitoring system that always knows how many gallons the engine has used. At 700 miles and 100 gallons I know it's time to look for fuel.
  • Probably the sending unit. My 03 Ambassador had the same issue when I bought it. These guys made the original units and can send you and updated replacement after walking you through a few simple tests and tank depth measurement. Easy to replace as its top tank mounted and the fuel door panels are hinged and can be raised like the cargo bay doors with the removal of a couple screws on the bottom. Good Luck, Sticky

  • I'll be watching for the helpful responses to your post. My HR Ambassador has the same problem.
