Can you describe the smell? Does it smell like burning plastic or maybe an acrid ozone type smell? Do you have to run the hot water after turning on the Aqua hot for the smell to occur or does just turning on the Aqua hot cause the smell? Have you located the Aqua Hot and looked around it to see if something has fallen over onto it and is starting to burn?

I suspect the "fumes" are diesel fumes that the original poster is referring to? Can you share some more details? There are a lot of things happening in an Aquahot, therefore, a lot of ways it can go wrong. Or, it could just be you are smelling some of the grey smoke that happens in the first few seconds of operation.

Cracked heat exchanger?? Have you inspected for that??

drrichardgarden, I'd recommend that you head over to Aquahot's website and look up your particular model's manual. In the manual you will find a very good troubleshooting guide. That should get you well on your way to understanding what is wrong, if anything, with your boiler.
