The People's Republic of California will raise the gas tax between 16 and 76 cents per gallon according to my local paper (SGVT). This is because of the CARB requirements lately passed. Effective Jan 1, I believe.
This is on top of one of the highest gas taxes in the country.
What politician in this state can resist a pile of money existing someplace and not want to pry it loose for his own personal agenda?
Also, remember, a government project has a lifetime the same as a politician's attention span.
We used to have the most equitable taxes in the country. If your vehicle weighs more or travels faster, you use more gas and contribute more taxes. Sadly, that fictitious 'lock-box' those moneys were in were routinely raided for special projects having nothing to do with transportation. So with the money gone, the pols cry they need more $$$ for the transportation infrastructure.
On top of that, both the feds and the CA mandated cars with better MPG which resulted in less gas taxes, 'in order to save the planet'. More lost revenue.
