generator carburetor fuel filter question

i have a onan marquise gold 5500 and i just replaced the carburetor but the old carb had a screw in for the fuel filter but the new carb only had a connect inlet.i went to local auto zone and picked up a see through fuel filter made of plastic and installed it. started it up and it ran like new. my question is should i have installed a metal in line filter? is the inside of the generator case to hot for a plastic like filter. thanks

pete
  • I don't think I would want the fuel filter (plastic) inside the case, and also I would want it before the fuel pump. JMHO
  • As posted by OP, Onan discontinued using the fuel filter at the carb. They offered a fitting to replace the filter. The replacement carburetors have a metal tube to connect the fuel line to carb. Onan considered this filter redundant, since they have a filter installed in fuel pump inlet under the base. And they were prone to leak, and Onan now has a much better filter p/n 149-2341-01, available to use at fuel pump inlet. I would not use the plastic in-line filter in gen compartment (imho)
  • My genny had the fuel filter on the carb like your old one. Found out that Onan discontinued it and replaced it with a fitting. Due to vibration they were prone to leak. On my Genny there was another filter in line between the carb and the fuel tank.
