Our ONAN 4KY often takes two "priming cycles". I prime, crank, and if it doesn't start in 5 seconds (or so, I don't time it but 45 is a LONG time to listen to a starter), then I prime again. When I crank after the second priming it starts darn near immediately.
You're right trying to conserve the starter. Changing it is NOT an easy task.
