grey looking water sometimes

We have a new (for us) Class A motorhome. We've been using it just about full time for 3 months now. Recently we've noticed that on occasion there is dark gray/black looking water that comes out of the faucets. We've seen this at the kitchen and bathroom sinks and also in the toilet. It only occurs every once in awhile and clears up if we run the water for 10-15 seconds.

I think (but not positive) that it only happens when we are using our water tank and not connected to a hose. I had thought it might happen only with the water heater on, but then today we had the issue in the toilet.

Any thoughts? Thanks.
  • I have seen the problem with carbon (charcoal) filters.

    Two possible causes:

    1. In the instructions there is a procedure that must be followed when installing a new filter or replacing the filter cartridge.

      OR

    2. Be very careful here. If the water system hasn't been used in a while, the filter could contain black mold. Replace it.
  • We've had the same problem with carbon water filters. But it happens connected to city water rather than using the tank as our filter is connected to our hose.
  • I would do a complete plumbing system sanitize.

1/4 bleach per 15 gallons. Fill fresh water tank FULL with solution and (even overfill so that top f tank has treated water).....then using on-board pump run solution thru every faucet/shower hot/cold sides, toilet, low point drains and washing machine line (if you have) until you smell bleach. Then let sit overnight and then drain flush everything.

Also make sure any water filter is treated and new filter used.
  • If you are using one of the replaceable blue water filters it could be caused from it. Those filters are carbon filters and could be the carbon from inside of it. Tim
