I pulled in to get gas, once in New Mexico and once in Utah. As I was filling up two guys come up and tell me that I have a flat spot on my tire and should have it looked at. First guy says that tires must be out of align and I could bring it over to his shop (located on the same property) and he would check it out for me. I politely declined, made up a story that it wasn't my motor home and I would let owner know when I got home. Second time two guys, same story about alignment , when I said ya it should be ok now, as I just got it aligned . Then his buddy looks underneath and says, hey you've got a broken shock. Again I declined. Only has 20,000 miles

It's a widespread scam technique that's been around a long time. I never let anyone inspect my vehicle or even get near it. You avoided a big ripoff.

Yes, twice in Utah at a Walmart. I reported to store and they called police. Police arrested both individuals.

I felt like telling them, I was born on a Wednesday but not last Wednesday

Back in the early to mid 70's same kind of scheme was common on I-75 in S Georgia and Florida. Guy tell the motorist (usually an old couple) he sees something dropping off the inside of a tire. He looks and squirts brake fluid from a concealed pump oil cup. Sticks his finger in it and smells. Yep, brake line leaking or wheel cylinder as he allows the driver to smell the liquid. Can't tell for sure until we get it on the rack over there.

I had a similar incident years ago involving shocks. It was in Arizona, I was in a car at the time..
Just tell them you will go to their shop as soon as you get gas, etc..
Then drive away.

Yep, a fellow came up to me while was gassing up at a Circle K a few weeks ago. He said he watched my front wheel as I turned in, and he could see the front end was badly out of alignment. And amazingly, his shop was right across the road and could fix it for me right away! I told him I own stock in Goodyear and prefer to wear my tires out quickly so I can buy lots of new ones. Then I just stared at him until he finally walked away...

Twice at the same Pilot / FlyingJ station on the way to Salt Lake city from St. George. Tire shop next to station guy rides around in golf cart.
