As others have said, All the PD needs to do is send out their hidden vin man..If they do not have one they can call the state police of assistance.
There are several serial numbers stamped into assorted parts..Then there are Engine and Transmission numbers..Some of which require a mechanic and a hoist to find... These contain the most significant portions of the VIN..From these (The Serial portion) a skilled investigator can often build the entire VIN (I do know how to do that but no longer have the tools).
This is how I would ID the ride.
