Help with route for 1st long trip

We are planning our retirement trips plural to start around April 2018. I have broken up the US into 5 trips for us to take of between 3 to 5 months each. The first one will be from SC to the Great Lakes area then back south to home. About a 3 month trip planned. It is a lot of work planning the trip and I don't want to reinvent the wheel. Are there some good books to give suggestions of places to visit, routes, campsites exc. Forum is great to use. We love nature and history. We love the outdoors, water, lakes, rivers ect. But want to see some of historical places in our country. Traveled quite a lot in past years but now ready to really explore our wonderful country. Any advice will make my life easier as I put together our first leg. The second trip will be east cost to Maine then back. Want to see North East in the fall.
  • For laughs and giggles you can include a drive AROUND the Great lakes or just part of them, cross into Canada in Detroit and reenter the US at Niagara Falls or up north at Alexandria Bay. We have driven around four of the five not Ontario which we lived on for most of our lives.
  • Subscribed! We're planning a great lakes trip for next summer.

Whereabout in SC are you? In the upstate by chance?
  • Everyone comes up here to Lake Erie from Cleveland ( Rock & Roll) to Niagara Falls! But keep going east along Lake Ontario, see the great cliffs and state parks, then around the middle of NY drop down on 390 to take in the wineries of our Finger Lakes. Back up 81 to Saratoga, Lake George, Lake Placid and then toward Lake Champlain, go to Stowe VT, Ben & Jerry's, Get back to Massachussets and Yankee Candle flagship store...... Is that enough yet? We can always help on this forum.... Welcome!
  • Good Sam has some great stuff on it's website for getting there and where to stay. Trip Advisor is a good resource for Things-to-do.
