How to replace/repair lift pump? UPDATE!

All finished yesterday, started it up today, ran fine, no more leaking lift pump. Thanks for all you replies, Bill

I need to clear up my previous post. You are correct, there are 6 threaded holes on the new lift pump for fittings and only 4 on my old one with one having a plug in it and 3 with fuel line fittings. The plug and 3 fittings get re-used leaving 2 un-used or open. You need 2 special plugs from Cummins. The threaded holes are all different size and depending how your set-up is you may need more or less of these plugs. The fuel lines remain the same and in the same position, I just needed to plug 2 threaded holes that are not used. I hope this clears up any confusion I may have caused, Bill:?

The fuel lines cannot route different, their ends are all different on all 3 lines and are just long enough to reach the pump and are not very flexible as they are near to 1" O.D. diameter. The new pump is on it way and according the the picture of the pump in the listing it is exactly the same.

Larry, that makes me feel better about having to buy the entire pump assembly! :)

After changing the gasket 3 times over 2 years, I finally changed out the whole lift pump on my ISL 370. I think the gaskets I was getting from Cummins were the old ones that don't like the ULSD. New pump is leak-free so far after 1+ years.

I had to order the entire pump assembly as the gasket set/kit is NO longer available per Cummins and 2 Cummins dealers. I did look for old stock and could not find anyone that had them left over. The new pump P/N for mine is 4935005 and fits many models not just my 400 ISL. $315 bucks :( But on the bright side I have it almost removed and a new one on the way :)

Cummins 4928511 is the part number for the gasket on my ISC. It might be correct for the ISL, I have no knowledge. Cummins no longer sells separately as they want you to buy a new lift pump. You might find some old stock at a truck parts store. You might want to tighten slightly and see it the leak stops. That worked for me after replacing twice. Remember the lift pump is an AL alloy so do not overtighten. There are three bolts on top. I did find this note from Cummins:

Because of the fuel lift pump design differences, two service gaskets have been released. The Part Numbers are 4928511 and 4928512. These gaskets are not interchangeable. However, ISC/ISL CM554 engines built after approximately ESN 46319395 and ISX engines built after ESN 79055000 can use fuel lift pump gasket Part Number 4928512. To identify the correct gasket, inspect the face of the lift pump housing: • Remove the three bolts on the top of the lift pump mounting adapter. • Check for a support rib (see the new-style lift pump gasket illustration). Early-Style Lift Pump Gasket This lift pump housing takes gasket Part Number 4928511. New-Style Lift Pump Gasket This lift pump housing takes gasket Part Number 4928512. The gasket is located between the adapter and the lift pump housing. The correct gasket can also be determined by the lift pump serial number located on the side of the lift pump housing or on the lift pump mounting adapter. NOTE: The lift pump may need to be removed to read the serial number.
