I did not know

We have a 2007 Chevy HD 2500 truck that we bought new. We pulled and lived in a fiver for three years.
I had the tranny serviced every 25,000 miles while towing, and since, every 50,000 not towing.
The truck has 226,000 miles on it. It started showing signs of leakage a few months back, and I assumed it was the front seal. I added fluid as needed.

I decided to take it in to a tranny shop. They tell me that even though it (allison) has a spin on filter, there is also one a located inside the pan.

So, those of you that want a complete tranny service, you might want to consider pulling the pan for the internal filter as well.

Hope this helps with those with the Duramax/Allison combo.

  • So who did the servicing every 25,000 or 50,000 miles. Did or do you use Allison specified approved synthetic transmission fluid
  • Any of the larger chassis RV's(like Safari, Monaco, Holiday Rambler, etc) with the 8.1L GM engine had the Allison 1000 transmission. The smaller chassis with the 8.1L engines had the GM transmissions.

Many Class A RV's have an Allison transmission.

None to my knowledge have a 1000 series though. The internal "filter" is a fine screen, it is not a true filter.

Ray...My Monaco class A definitely has an Allison 1000 transmission.

  • After 226,000 miles with many of them pulling a heavy RV, I think your transmission has given good service.

How is this a Class A issue, maybe consider moving the post?
  • What model Allison transmission?

The Allison 1000 has a spin on filter and an internal filter. Allison says never change the internal filter unless you are rebuilding the transmission.

They also say to NEVER do a power flush on the Allison 1000.
