Insurance for 1992 Southwind

We just purchased a 1992 Southwind S/P 35. We paid 9k for it. Should we go with our "regular" insurance company (Allstate) or is there a cheaper but good way of insuring. Before, Allstate charged us based on the price of our 5th wheel. We had full coverage for it. Should we carry full coverage on this vehicle? Should we go with another insurer? What's the best for an older MH?
  • I used Geico when I bought the current unit, they gave me the best price online on a Saturday morning. A few years later I let them quote my boat and cars and they were a LOT lower than everyone else. I now have all vehicles, the RV and the boat with them. Rates depend on several factors, one big one is where you live.
  • Get some different rates. Check with your regular insurance carrier first.

State Farm does give a 50% discount on motorhome insurance IF you also have at least 1 car insured with them. By this I mean - you will pay annually what the cost would be for 6 months if you don't insure a car, so 50% less. You can also get a multi-car discount by having a car insured - that is another 15%. This would be as long as you do not need full-timers insurance coverage.
We are full-time and now have Progressive. They had the cheapest rate for the best coverages. Make sure your quotes have exactly the same coverage and deductibles to do a fair comparison.
  • State Farm gave me Full coverage for my 1990 southwind with a total loss value from them of $20,000 is under $425.00 per year

We just transferred all of our vehicles, including the Coach over to Allsate from State Farm. No one could beat their price but then again, they wanted our auto business, along with the rest that we have with them and offered every discount available. We carry full coverage on the rig, but keep the replacement cost down to a realistic level. Considering the age of your purchase, it wouldn't take much to total it and about the best you could hope for from your insurance company, if you lost it tomorrow, would be for the $9 or $10K, so I'd say not to put more than that amount on it.
  • Progressive was lower than Allstate for us, even with our multi-policy and other Allstate discounts. Even with collision added, Progressive was still quite a bit cheaper.
  • We have a 96 Southwind. I use our regular insurance company, they gave us the best deal. We get the multi vehicle discount, it works for us.
  • Go with a good liability and uninsured insurance policy.
Collision probably would cost more than the motorhome is worth.
You get a dent in it and they will total it out and give you very little.
