God bless the greatest generation!

Staff Sergeant Kenneth T. Bauer, 2nd Signal Service Battalion, enlisted and served December 1940 to September 1945. Veteran of the East Indies and New Guinea campaigns March 1942-November 1944. In proud and loving memory. I miss him every day.

I also want to thank all servicemen For their sacrifice and dedication. My wife"s father and Brothers and Sisters served in WW 2 . I watched footage on TV yesterday of the D Day landing. Those brave brave men ! I love looking at pictures of the soldiers from WW2 just like the one posted. Theirs a smile on their face and a twinkle in their eye, (I guess these were the pictures they sent back home to the family and "mom"). They are all starched and pressed but if you look at the hats they always have a little tilt to them, all a little different . I have to think that is that particular soldiers"style"in wearing a hat! May God Bless Them All !

On Memorial Day the Kitsap Sun listed in there newspaper all servicemen who died in action that lived in Kitsap County. From WWI to present day. The sailors who died in the attack of Pearl Harbor led the list of the fallen. I have the utmost dignity and respect for your Dad having to be put in a hopeless and helpless situation and survive it.

Truly a day for remembering our Greatest Generation, and they were GREAT.
My dad landed in Africa, went up thru Italy, served in the occupation army in Japan, came home, had me, went to Korea where he was killed in 1950. I never got the chance to know him well...but...

Times 2 for me and my family also, we can not imagine what a different world it may have been without the sacrifices of our Allied forces on D Day.

I did 20+ as a Sailor from 1980 to 2003. Never fire a shot in anger. Can't even image what those men did on that morning 72 years ago. What motivates someone to charge a machine gun thru water and across an open beach with no cover? What kept the land craft Coxswains going towards the beach with mortar and artillery fire landing close by?

Many were children of Fathers who served in trenches of France 26 years earlier. All grew up and came of age during the Great Depressions. Many went on to Korea a few years later and a few unselfishly did tours of duty in Vietnam.

I many have a few accolades from my service time but nothing, nothing to compare with those men who went ashore in Normandy, flew missions over Japan or Germany, experienced the horror of Iwo Jima and countless nameless places across the world from 1939 to 1945.

Thank you to all veterans. As I type this, our family is watching "The Longest Day", which has become a June 6th family tradition since the kids were old enough to understand the sacrifices and conditions those brave men endured.

You can be assured our children will not forget their service.
