Loud Onan

Hello all,
I put on new muffler only to discover must've been cracked exhaust manifold. After couple hours running(loudly), it completely broke off. Now, VERY loud. Anyway, it is not mounted on a slide out tray. Anyone ever had to replace manifold or get to rear of genset, and how is it accomplished? There is virtually NO room to access anything behind the genset and only about 5" above. They crammed this thing in so tight, I have no idea where to start. Thx everybody! Greg
  • On my previous rig (97 Winne Vectra) I had to remove the genset twice due to mice damage. It wasn't on a slide and was simply bolted through the generator frame into the angle iron attached to the RV. I used a floor jack under the generator to remove the load, unbolted the four mounting bolts and lowered it onto blocks that I had pre-staged under the generator. The power cables were wired through a junction box (similar to a house connection), the controls used an auto style connector and it had a single fuel line that needed to be removed and plugged.

Overall it was pretty easy, but you do need to be careful to balance the load because IIRC it weighted about 320 lbs. Good luck.

  • I feel your pain. My dad has an Onan Microlite 4kW in his Chinook Concourse. It needs a new starter, but the folks at Chinook hung the generator in space and then built the coach around it. I don't think they had maintenance in mind when they designed the enclosure.
