Low dinette seats on Coachmen 213QB

I recently bought a 2008 213QB and love the 60 by 80 bed and large exterior storage. The only thing we didn't like is the high dinette window and low seats. My wife was having a hard time seeing anything but sky when she was sitting at the table. The table felt like it was too high, as well.

I bought some 2.5 inch thick impact resistant polystyrene rigid insulation from Home Depot (Owens Corning C-300) and cut it to fit under the cushions. I used the plywood cushion bases as a template. What a difference-so much more comfortable!

To cover the pink polystyrene where it is visible under the cushion, I put camouflage duck tape along the edges of the poly styrene, which blends in quite well with the upholstery.

Now a question: Has anybody replaced the foam in cushions without getting whole new covers made up? Is it hard to get the foam into the cushion covers? The stock foam is not very dense so we would like to replace it with something firmer, but the material is still like new so I don't want to pay for a whole new upholstery job.
  • I've replaced the foam in mine. The hardest part is deciding which foam to buy to get the firmness that you want. Foam is fairly expensive so I didn't want to do a lot of experimentation and it does soften a bit initially. I'd suggest Lux-R or Lux-HQ from these guys. Measure the foam thickness from the existing foam itself since it should be a little thicker than the cushion appears to be from the outside. If you have a hard time working the foam into the covering, you can wrap it up in a thin plastic painting drop cloth to get it to slide in more easily and the plastic can be pulled out after the foam is in place. You'll probably want to glue some batting on the foam too, here's a how-to. Looks like they have a Canadian website too. Foam cuts pretty easily with an electric kitchen carving knife or it cuts super slick on a bandsaw.
  • I'm going to take our worn out foam cushions to an upholstery and because the covers are in excellent condition the cost should be minimal...
